Specialty Equipment Print E-mail

Servicing the nuclear industry means facing challenges of custom and unique equipment requirements.  Personnel have been designing and manufacturing specialty equipment for the nuclear industry for over thirty years. Although the individual requirements may be unique the design considerations for the industry are often common. With the benefit of having been exposed to many creative design solutions over many years, we are able to expeditiously find the right solution that works the first time.

Key Design Considerations

Reliability - Because equipment access time at a nuclear plant is often very limited and costly, equipment must do its job when it is required, every time. All aspects of the design and manufacturing process must therefore be directed to ensuring ultimate reliability.
Simplicity - Simple designs mean that fewer things can go wrong. Supplying low-tech solutions to high-tech problems is often the key to many successful tooling operations.
Durability - Nuclear facilities have operational and environmental considerations not found elsewhere, therefore experienced selections of materials, services and control equipment is essential to a successful and durable design.
Maintainability - Because of the typical restrictions on equipment access in a nuclear plant, as well as hazardous environmental considerations, equipment must be designed from the ground up to require the minimum of maintenance. In addition, such maintenance must be easy to accomplish, and the equipment must be designed so that it can be easily decontaminated.

Services Provided

ODIM Numet provides turn-key designs for nuclear process systems, remote controlled tool systems, decontamination equipment and hazardous material handling. These services include:

  • specification of functional requirements (mechanical, electrical, process and control systems),
  • concept development,
  • stress & deflection analysis,
  • design of electrical and control systems,
  • detailed design,
  • equipment component selection and evaluation,
  • fabrication and assembly,
  • functional & proof testing,
  • commissioning,
  • on site support & maintenance, and
  • operation & maintenance manuals.

Prototype Development

Numet provides services and expertise in the design and testing of a wide variety of prototype equipment and systems. Prototype Development services include in-house design, fabrication, and testing, from concept through to pre-production systems.

Broad Range of In-House Expertise

In-house design staff includes Mechanical and Electrical and Engineers and Technologists with many years experience in the design, development and production of,
  • material handling systems & equipment,
  • production automation systems,
  • special tooling mechanisms,
  • process systems & equipment,
  • machinery & process control (PLC or computer based),
  • and pressure vessels and components.

Transferring high level radioactive waste from one shielded flask system to another requires careful attention to alignment. Creating a mobile modular platform for high accuracy alignment of 60 tons of flasks over a 50 ft length is a type of specialty equipment is the kind of challenge that ODIM Numet excels at.
A mechanism to secure the lid to a container transporting used nuclear fuel is an extremely safety critical device. To design and produce this welded assembly, and meet the high tolerances required to ensure a safe fit, is another specialty equipment challenge that fits well with Numet’s expertise.

ODIM Numet combines its electrical design experience with its nuclear code qualifications to provide reactor vault cable penetrations of all sizes and complexity, to ASME Code requirements.

This seismically qualified nuclear reactor system incorporates a carriage that remotely traverses a liquid filled tank. A neutron detector is lowered into ASME nuclear class 1 sample coils housed in a liquid filled moderator tank. This is a excellent example of the importance of the diversity of expertise that ODIM Numet can apply to meeting the specialty equipment requirements of the nuclear industry.

Numet supplies equipment that goes right to the reactor core. This tool was designed to push delicate Nuclear Fuel Bundles inside reactor Fuel Channels. The tool must traverse obstacles and bends to enter the channel. It is designed to ensure that critical cooling water flow is not unduly obstructed during the fuel push process.

Decommissioning activities at various US DOE sites include the stabilization of waste salts. Using ODIM Numet’s custom built furnaces these salts are heated in the presence of air and can be fully oxidized. These shielded furnaces typically incorporate heating, cooling and mixing systems, as well as instrumentation for process monitoring.

This seismically qualified platform system was designed and supplied by ODIM Numet to provide worker access to the face of a CANDU reactor. It is of modular construction, and can be assembled in numerous different configurations depending on access requirements. It is assembled by wheeling the modular platform sections into place and clamping them to an elevating bridge

This specially designed Transportation Trolley handles and maneuvers 14,000 lb Shielded Flasks in a reactor building. Its compact low slung design provides good tipping stability and a tight turning circle.

If complete automation of a process is required, ODIM Numet can provide it. This system hardens the outer surface of Zircalloy fuel tubes by induction heat treatment. The process also includes straightening, cleaning, welding, testing, water cooling and cutting operations. The system was designed from the ground up by ODIM Numet to meet specific tube processing requirements.
