CANDU Reactor Maintenance and Refurbishment Platforms Print E-mail

Scope of Work:

Concept Design

  • Finite element analysis and seismic qualification to satisfy requirements of the Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission
  • Mechanical engineering, design and drawings
  • Accident, criticality and shielding analysis
  • Fabrication and assembly
  • Functional testing
  • Installation, operation and maintenance documentation

System Function and Features:   (maintenance platforms)

This modular platform system can be quickly assembled at the reactor face in numerous configurations to provide access to any Fuel Channel site. It serves as a personnel operating platform for the replacement of single fuel channel assemblies. The platforms can be assembled by wheeling the modular sections into place and clamping them to an elevating bridge, using robust clamp mechanisms custom designed specifically for operation by workers in a radiation suit environment. A shielded canopy, complete with a thick steel roof is installed to aid in the radiation protection of personnel.  The platform is of aluminum construction to minimize loading on the Fuelling Machine Bridge to which it attaches. The perimeter of the assembled platform is enclosed by handrails and access safety gates designed in accordance with Occupational Health and Safety Act requirements. Attention to details such as fabrication tolerances, recessed tie downs and smooth surfaces were critical to provide an obstacle free, safe working environment for the radiation workers.

Scope of work:   (reactor refurbishment platforms)

  • Mechanical and electrical system engineering and design
  • Controls and software development and supply
  • Fabrication, inspection and commissioning
  • Operation and maintenance documentation
  • Site commissioning and operation support

System Function and Features:

ODIM Numet supplied all of the AECL Retube Platforms for use in the BNGS Retube operations.  Each platform supported execution of the necessary services as well as supporting a Retube Tooling Carrier (RTC) and two multi-task Work Tables (W/T) to allow both local and remote fuel channel removal and installation operations.  The design of these platforms was significantly involved and with the support of the basic principles of QA, engineering, design, fabrication and testing trouble-free operation was attained.  The experiences from projects like this add to the tool box of common entities for all of Numet’s designs.
